San Diego Workshop Schedule & Registration Information

Our first California Commercial Fishing Apprenticeship Program workshops were held in Winter 2020 for the Greater San Diego Area. See below for a sample workshop schedule, as well as more detailed workshop details.

While COVID-19 restrictions had limited our ability to offer the program in 2021, we are hoping to resume in spring/summer 2022.

AMSEA USCG Accepted Drill Conductor Training (12 hours)

Instructors: Richard Ullrich, Advanced Yacht Services & Port Hueneme; James Stellflug, U.S. Coast Guard

Topics & Info: Cold Water Survival Skills, Flooding Control, Helicopter Rescues, EPIRB’s, Maydays, Signals, Immersion Suits, PFD’s, Life Rafts, Safety Orientations, Emergency Drills, Abandon Ship procedures. CFR regulations require successful completion of 16 out of 18 skills in order for the trainee to receive certification

First Aid, CPR and AED Training (6 hours)

Instructors: Jack Guida and Raoul Ludwig, USCG Auxillary

Topics & Info: First Aid, CPR, and AED as well as other skills and information useful for mariners

Optional work session to complete on-your-own online trainings (6-7 hours)

BoatUS clean boating on-line class (https://www.boatus.org/clean-course/) (2 hours; free)

Quickbooks Online Essential Training through LinkedIn Learning (5 hours; free with a 1-month trial if you are registered with LinkedIn, $29.99/month thereafter but can cancel anytime)

USCG About Boating Safely (skills & seamanship) (14 hours)

Instructors: Jack Guida, Dennis Dyer, Raoul Ludwig, Bart Williams, USCG Auxiliary

Topics & Info: Know your boat, Before you get underway, Operating your vessel safely, Navigating the waters, Legal requirements of boating, Emergencies, Lines and knots for your boat. A final exam will be given and the certificate awarded that may be used to apply for a California Department of Waterways Boater ID card, which will be required of all boaters in about 2 years. Please download “Knots 3D” on your smartphones or tablets before class.

Introduction to Seafood Business and Marketing

(first meeting only; the description of the rest of the class and registration information is below): A Tour of the Tuna Harbor Dockside Market (1st meeting: 4 hrs)

Instructors: Carrie Culver and Theresa Talley, California Sea Grant and Quentin Fong, Alaska Sea Grant

Topics & Info: In this first meeting, you will get an introduction to fishing families, and learn about local fisheries and products. The workshop will continue on Thursday (see below)

Introduction to Fisheries Science, Conservation and Practice (24 hours)

Instructors: Carrie Culver and Theresa Talley, California Sea Grant

Topics & Info: Marine ecology, environmental and fisheries policy, anatomy of a working harbor and fishing vessels, sustainability and data collections.

Introduction to Seafood Business and Marketing (24 hours total)

Instructors: Carrie Culver and Theresa Talley, California Sea Grant; Quentin Fong, Alaska Sea Grant

Topics & Info: Marketing your catch, types of seafood businesses, regulations, business feasibility analysis and plan development, marketing research and tools, and seafood quality
