Karen Gutierrez will graduate in 2021 with a Master of Science in Earth Sciences from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, where she also obtained her undergrad degree in 2019. Her master’s project focuses on the area of paleoclimatology, specifically conducting isotope analysis of fossil corals to reconstruct a record of tropical Pacific climate conditions around a well-known climate excursion called the “4.2 ka event.”
As the Delta Science Program's Communication, Synthesis, and Decision Support Unit fellow, she hopes to learn how to effectively communicate science across different audiences and be part of a team contributing to science-driven decisions in the Bay-Delta system.
